Tanya - an old favourite from past Red Alert games - makes a welcome return (the character does anyway as the actress has been replaced with an arguably more attractive counterpart), armed with her usual pistols and C4 explosive. They can also help to offset the inevitable repetitiveness of the single-player game by encouraging some personal involvement with the protagonists - this only works if the production is first-class, and it is.

As always, the pre-mission briefings are excellent - starring a cast of professional actors, they add spadefuls of character to the game. However, it would be wrong to say there's nothing new in Red Alert 2. And to be fair, the previous games have always been well-received and excellent sellers. No flashy 3D graphics for Red Alert 2 here no fog of war, no multiple mission paths in single-player - not even a rotateable isometric view like Sim City or Rollercoaster Tycoon.

So it's little surprise to find that Red Alert 2 follows the tradition of ignoring recent developments in real-time strategy games and delivering the same pacy gameplay the others in the series offered. But while other developers have been keen to expand on the theme, adding everything from 3D graphics to first-person perspectives, Westwood has always remained true to its retro roots. It's a simple formula, and a much-imitated one. Somewhere else on the battlefield your opponent is doing the same. A few units and a battlefield with scattered resource fields at your disposal, you build a base, harvest these resources, and use funds thus gained to construct an army. Command & Conquer games, in the past, have followed the same recipe. Lastly ground units really hate shooting at naval units sitting by the shore to the point where sometimes they'll just stop dead if I tell them to attack.Westwood isn't exactly a name people associate with innovation. I've also had instances of mammoth tanks being destroyed by lone infantrymen because they weren't shooting back and I wasn't micromanaging them. That's really hurt me a couple of times on missions where you're deliberately given a tonne of crystals for easy cash to build a large defence. The ore trucks seem to actively avoid crystals so I'll find I'm short of cash because they'll try driving miles away to get scraps of ore unless I click on each crystal in turn. I'm not sure if it's something I've just overlooked for years in the original but I do find the AI to be a little off in places in comparison to the original. I can't say I've noticed a huge change in difficulty between the original and the remaster, but that's coming from someone who prefers to play on normal difficulty and occasionally drops it down to easy when I don't feel like dealing with respawning helicopters and cruisers. The N64 is a completely different engine but will test that as well. I need to try the Saturn version soon which I presume will be the same from what I remember. The slowness that I think people think is the loading of the level and cutscenes.

The game will run really fast, and you can get overwhelmed really quickly. If there are not a ton of animations or effects happening. It is slowish in game play but you cannot slow it down further to really help you when you need to input vast amounts of commands. I remembered it being slow, but the PS version has only one speed. I actually had a different experience replaying it the other day. I think I may be forced to lower it later in the game. But considering how plentiful the resources are normal speed is quite fun. I tried moderate speed, and it feels more familiar.
